Traditionally, in Ireland, December 8th marked the official beginning of the Christmas season. This was the day when homes were festively decorated and people from the countryside made their way to the ‘big smoke’ of Ireland’s cities to do their Christmas shopping.

To celebrate the kickoff to Christmas, we’re gathering— in-person and online — to share songs, stories, and poems about the festive season. We’re hosting two in-person parties on December 8th at the Irish American Heritage Center and Chicago Gaelic Park and will be joined online by friends from Irish communities in Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester in the UK.
